The iPhone version of Layar seems to over expose all the 3D objects. The 3D object is shown correctly if another point is the layer is selected, however as soon as Layar selects the 3D objects it is over exposed (turns pale). When a texture is applied to a model, for some reason the iPhone then does display the model in its “natural” colors. The 3D objects seem not to load for some reason sometimes. We have no idea why this effect occurs at this time. Both devices show the problem at the same time (Models 5 and 9).
The 5000 faces limit per model, advised by Layar itself, is very doable for both these phones. The number of objects displayed does not seem to matter. The number of faces is really the only factor that seems to have an affect the performance. We are curious to see how far we can push the complexity of the models before it affects the performance. We decided to do another performance test!
Summary: 5000 faces. For some reason the iPhone wouldn’t display the model. We saw the “loading 3d model” indicator showing for a split second, but it didn’t provide us with a model. Performance on the HTC Hero is good. Remember this is the maximum recommended amount of faces by Layar.
Summary: Ok so let’s push the envelope! Way past the 5000 faces. Both phones still giving good performance. The HTC seems to really leap behind in loading time though, but once the model is loaded its performance is good.
