Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy (MCEM) User Manual 2008

October 26th, 2009 · No Comments

The purpose of this Manual is to provide Users of the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy (MCEM) with a convenient reference that they may consult to find out about the Centre, its staff and facilities, operating procedures and occupational health and safety information. If you have any questions or comments regarding the Manual or the Centre, please contact the Manager, Dr Peter Miller (contact details below).

The Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy:
• Performs first-class research in electron microscopy and atom probe microscopy and
• Provides advanced instrumentation, expertise and training in electron microscopy and atom probe microscopy to enable researchers to solve key problems in science and engineering.

The Centre’s suite of instrumentation can determine the composition, structure and bonding of materials down to the atomic scale. MCEM staff members provide expert advice and training to researchers using the Centre, as well as conducting their own specialised research programmes in fundamental and applied microscopy. The Centre also plays a key role in educating undergraduates and postgraduates in microscopy.

The Centre serves and collaborates with researchers from Monash University, other universities, government research agencies, Centres of Excellence, Cooperative Research Centres and industry. The Centre supports a wide variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research projects, covering topics from corrosion to catalysis, optics to superconductivity, alloys to ceramics, polymers to biomaterials and microelectronics to nanotechnology. Four major new instruments will be commissioned in 2008, including Australia’s first “aberration-corrected” transmission electron microscope, which will be the highest resolution microscope in Australia and one of just a handful worldwide.
The Centre works closely with Monash MicroImaging, which provides microscopy facilities for the biological sciences.
The Centre reports to the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor-Research via the Monash Institute for Nanosciences, Materials and Manufacture.
